Extra Credit: Stumbleupon.com

Stumbleupon.com is a discovery engine that finds that best of the web, recommended just for you. This discovery engine is a fairly new addition to the Internet; Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith, Justin LaFrance and Eric Boyd founded it in 2001. This website works by uses stumbling rather than the typical search engine method. When you first create your stumbleupon account you create a username and password and then it asks you for your interests. It gives you over 500 topics to choose from, and then from that point on when you log in you click the button that says, “Stumble your interests”. One way that makes this search engine different from others is that it filters through the endless amounts of information on the web to direct stumblers to high quality web sites which are relevant to their personal interests. Stumbleupon uses collaborative filtering of like-minded we surfers. When stumbling on this discovery engine you also have the option to click a button in the top left corner of the screen that has thumbs up symbol. By clicking this you save that specific web page to your favorites and can go back to that page at your own convenience. It also allows for you to pass on that website to other people with similar interests.

To share your favorite links to a broader audience, other than just stumbleupon users you can now post your best content on twitter and Facebook. You can share your content to multiple social media websites with one click of a button. Stumbleupon.com is great to use when looking for new and creative websites that are in common with your interests. This website from experience can keep you entertained or hours, whether it be through content, pictures, videos, art, and many other aspects of visual entertainment. The growth of this company over the years has gone from 1 million users when it was first created to 20 million registered users, which further proves that this is one of the greatest discovery engines of our time.
